Drugs Description


Gliclazide (Reclide 80mg)

Indications: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus
Dose: 40-80mg daily with breakfast.
Mode: Stimulates production and release insulin from pancreas.
Side effects: Appetite loss, nausea, upset stomach, weakness.


Glibenclamide (Apo-glyburide 5mg)
Indications: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus
Dose: 2.5-5mg daily with or immediately after breakfast.
Mode: Stimulates production and release insulin from pancreas.
Side effects: Appetite loss, nausea, upset stomach, weakness.

Metformin(Gloucophage 500mg)
Indications: Diabetes Mellitus
Dose: 500mg every 8 hrs. with or immediately after lunch.
Mode: Biguanide, works by moderately lowering blood fats.
Side effects: Appetite loss, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting.

Insulin (Humulin N, R 70/30, Novolin N, R & 70/30)
Indications: Type 1 & 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Dose: Based on patients condition.
Mode: Produces hormone in the pancreas. It treats diabetes because the body make enough.
Side effects: Allergic reaction, breakdown of fat tissues, skin depression.


Bendrofluazide(Bezide 5mg)

Indications: Hypertension.
Dose: 5-10mg daily.
Mode: Diuretic, eliminates excess water by increasing urination.
Side effects: Mild stomach upset, dizziness, light-headedness.

Methyldopa (Dopegyt 250mg)
Indications: Hypertension.
Dose: 125-250mg 2-3 times daily on empty stomach.
Mode: Convertied to a form of norepinephrine which stimulates receptors in the central nervous system.
Side effects: Temporary sedation, headaches, weakness.

Atenolol (Entolol 50mg)
Indications: Hypertension.
Dose: 50-100mg daily.
Mode: Beta adrenergic blocking drug useful in blocking beta receptors in body.
Side effects: Fatigue, weakness, impotence.

Lisinopine (Zestril 10mg)
Indications: Hypertension.
Dose: 2.5mg daily usual/ maintenance dose 10-20mg daily.
Mode: Prevents conversion of the hormone Angiotensin 1 to Angiotension 2 which is a blood vessel constrictor.
Side effects: Headache, dizziness, nausea, chronic cough.

Enalapril (Enam 10mg)
Indications: Hypertension.
Dose:2.5mg-20mg daily.
Mode: Prevents conversion of the hormone Angiotensin 1 to Angiotension 2 which is a blood vessel constrictor.
Side effects: Headache, dizziness, nausea, chronic cough.

Frusemide (Apo-Furosemide 40mg)

Indications: Oedema, Hypertension

Dose: 20- 40mg daily

Mode: Diuretic that inhibits sodium reabsorption in the kidney

Side Effects: Hypokalaemia, Hypotension, nausea, gastro-intestinal disturbances


Nifedipine (Apo-Nifed PA 20mg)
Indications: Hypertension.
Dose: 30-60mg daily.
Mode: Calcium channel blocker.
Side effects: Swelling of the ankles, feet, legs dizziness, light-headedness, flushing, nausea.

Isosorbide Dinitrate (Apo-ISDN 10mg)
Indications: Prevention and treatment of angina, left ventricular failure.
Dose: Angina 30-120mg daily/ Left ventricular failure 40-160 mg daily.
Mode: Relax muscles in blood vessels.
Side effects: Headaches, flushing of skin, dizziness, weakness, blurry vision.

Glyceryl Trinitrate 500mcg
Indications: Prevention and treatment of angina, left ventricular failure.
Dose: 0.3-1mg repeated as required.
Mode: Reduces venous, reduce left ventricular work.
Side effects: Headaches, flushing of skin.

Digoxin (Lanoxin 0.125mg)
Indications: Heart failure, Arrhythmias
Dose: 1-1.5mg in divided doses over 24hrs/ 250-500mcg daily.
Mode: Works heart muscle to increase ability to pump blood and helps regulate rhythym.
Side effects: Appetite loss, nausea, blurry vision, vomiting.

A.S.A. (Genprin 81mg)

Indications: Propryaxis of Myocardial Infarcation

Dosage: 75-300mg daily

Mode: Antiplatelet drug that decreases platelet aggregation and may inhibit thrombus formation

Side Effects: Broncuospasm, gastro-intestinal haemorrhage

Simvastatin (Simlo 20mg)

Indications: Hypercholesterolaemia and prevention of coronary Heart Disease

Dose: 10mg once daily at night

Mode: Inhibits an enzyme, involved in cholesterol synthesis

Side Effects: Headache, Altered liver function tests, gastro-intestinal effects, dizziness, Hepatitis, Jaundice


Acetazolamide (Apo-Acetazolamide 250mg)
Indications: Glaucoma.
Dose: 0.25-1g daily.
Mode: Inhibits enzyme carbonic arhydrase. Works as a mild diuretic and reduces intraocular pressure.
Side effects: Appetite loss, nausea, weight loss, vomiting.

Pilocarpine (Isopto-Carpine 2% & 4% Sys)
Indications: Glaucoma.
Dose: 3-6 times daily.
Mode: Reduces intraocular pressure.
Side effects: Small pupils, blurry vision.

Betaxolol (Betoptics 0.25% eye drops)
Indications: Glaucoma.
Dose: Twice daily.
Mode: Beta block that reduces intraocular pressure.
Side effects: Usually mild and transcient impotence .

Timolol ( Apo-Timo 0.5% eye Drops)
Indications: Glaucoma.
Dose: Twice daily.
Mode: Beta block that reduces intraocular pressure.
Side effects: Usually mild and transient impotence.


Ibuprofen FC 200mg

Indications: Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Dose: 200-800mg 4 times daily .
Mode: Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), inhibits prostaglandin production that plays a role in pain manifestation.
Side effects: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach ulcers and gastro-intestinal bleeding with chronic use.


Diclofenac SR 100mg

Indications: Rheumatoid Arthritis
Dose: 100-200mg daily.
Mode: Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), inhibits prostaglandin production that plays a role in pain manifestation.
Side effects: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach ulcers and gastro-intestinal bleeding with chronic use.


Amitriptyline 25mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 25-50mg three (3) times daily or as a single dose at bedtime.
Mode: Tricyclic antidepressant, blocks movement of the neurohormones, norepinephrine and serotonin into nerve endings to produce a sedative effect.
Side effects: Sedation, blurred vision, disorientation, muscle spasms, dry mouth, constipation, seizures.


Benzhexol/Trihexiphenidyl
(Apo-Trihex)2mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 1mg daily, increase gradually to 6-10mg daily in divided doses.
Mode: Anticholinergic, blocks the effects of acetylcholine, a major transmitter of nerve impulses.
Side effects: Dry mouth, urinary retention, dizziness, blurred vision and constipation.

Cholpromazine HCL 100mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 30-100mg or more daily depending on severity of condition.
Mode: Phenothiazine antipsychotic, blocks certain dopamine receptors in the brain.
Side effects: Drowsiness, confusion, insomnia and convulsions.


Fluoxetine 20mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 20-80mg daily.
Mode: Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSRI) blocks movement of the neurohormone, serotonin into nerve endings.
Side effects: Headache, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, weakness, dry mouth, nausea.


Sulpiride (Dogmatil) 50mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 200-400mg twice per day.
Mode: Antipsychotic, blocks certain dopamine receptors in the brain.
Side effects: Drowsiness, confusion, insomnia and convulsions.


Trifluoperazine 5mg

Indications: Depression
Dose: 5mg twice per day.
Mode: Phenothiazine antipsychotic, blocks certain dopamine receptors in the brain.
Side effects: Drowsiness, confusion, insomnia and convulsions.


Terazosin 2mg/5mg

Indications: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Dose: 1mg at bedtime usual maintenance dose 5-10mg daily.
Mode: Alpha blocker relaxes smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder to increase urinary flow and improve obstructive symptoms.
Side effects: Headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, hypotension.


Salbutamol Inhaler 100mcg (Salamol)

Indications: Chronic Asthma
Dose: 100-200 mcg 3-4 times daily.
Mode: Selective beta 2 agonist.
Side effects: Headache, palpitations, nervousness, tremor.


Beclomethasone Inhaler

(Beclate-50)

Indications: Chronic Asthma
Dose: 100-200mcg 3-4 times daily.
Mode: Inhaler corticosteroid reduces inflammation of bronchial mucus membranes.
Side effects: Dry mouth, hoarseness, candidacies of mouth or throat and rash.


Prednisolone Syrup
(Pediapred)

Indications: Chronic Asthma
Dose: 2.5-15mg daily.
Mode: Suppresses inflammatory and allergic diorders.
Side effects: Upset stomach possibly leading to ulceration.


Prednisolone 5mg

Indications: Rheumatoid Arthritis & Asthma
Dose: 2.5-5mg 3 to 4 times daily or more depending on severity of condition.
Mode: Suppresses inflammatory and allergic disorders.
Side effects: Gasto-intestinal ulceration, osteoporosis, adernal suppression and nausea.


Spacer with Mask

This is used for infants under the age of 2 years. It ensures proper delivery of the drug to infants who are unable to practice inhaling techniques when inhaled bronchodilators are used.
